Sustainability of cities and communities in planning and architecture.
“Bratislava through the eyes of communities”.
UMKA’s final conference reflected all the values that stretched through our joint project. It created a professional platform not only for both project partners, FAD STU as well as UiS, but especially for the partners from practice – experts, representatives of municipalities mainly from Bratislava, city planners, sociologists and researchers. The aim of this conference was to outline current trends and best practices in the field of urban and community planning and development with an emphasis on sustainability through the results achieved from the project. While the central expert theme of the opening conference was environmental sustainability, the closing conference focused on the aspect of social, and in particular, community sustainability. Subtitled Bratislava through the eyes of the community, the conference also included one key professional theme, namely, the community perspective on sustainability in the context of the capital city of Bratislava. How is it possible to build community? How can such practices be incorporated into standard city-making processes?
A distinctively important part was also focused on teaching methods and ways in which these topics can be implemented in educational systems so that we can better prepare the new young generation for practical, real life and thus better link the academic sector and practice. During the project we have managed to train more than 350 young people with improved skills and competences through 4 developed and innovative curricula, 8 innovative learning methods. These mainly included innovations in research-based pedagogical approaches for classroom learning as well as distance and blended learning, skills development and the promotion of teamwork and critical thinking which we have shared with our partners and will gradually implement in other teaching processes both here in Slovakia and in Norway.
