Curriculum innovation – creating safer cities

15.2.2024

Safety is one of the most important aspects in city making. Although often considered as a trivial
matter, security is all the more neglected by architects. It only comes to our attention when
something in the urban fabric is not working properly. However, implementing solutions into an
existing, inappropriately designed neighbourhood, street or square is usually more difficult and
financially disadvantageous. That is why we, together with assoc. prof. Tegg Westbrook, from the
Department of Safety, Economics, and Planning at the Faculty of Science and Technology,
University of Stavanger, took as a part of course Urban sociology look at the most common
problems our cities are currently facing and how we as architects and urban planners can respond
to them.
